How to Become a Engineer in 2022 : Exam, Eligibility, Colleges, Career

Engineering is a scientific field and job which requires the knowledge and use of scientific principles with the application of science and math to solve problems and design, build and invent things. It includes the development of a wide range of structures, cars, bridges, vehicles, buildings, etc. Engineering is a huge part of the modern-day world as it is very closely linked with technology. Engineers are creators of all the things we look at around us, from buildings to cars, the roads, and bridges. It is all possible because of the work of engineers. This job asks for innovation and a creative mindset with determination as well.

Certification and Degree

At the UG (Undergraduate) level in Engineering, the candidates can apply for either of the two courses B. Tech (Bachelor of Technology) or B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering).

At the PG (Postgraduate) level in Engineering, the candidates can apply for M.Tech or (Master of Technology) or M.E. (Master of Engineering).

Eligibility

Engineering can be pursued after clearing the 12th class examination from a recognized board in the science stream and Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as the compulsory subjects or even pursued by doing a diploma after 10th from a recognized board with at least 55% as the passing marks and Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry as compulsory subjects, in Engineering and then opt for the UG degrees.

1.For B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology) – The combined marks of the compulsory subjects should be above 60 percent. Admission in colleges mostly depends on the entrance exam performance, while the criteria may vary from college to college.

2.For B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering) – The combined marks scored by the student at the 10 + 2 level should be a minimum of 50 percent. While some colleges might allow admission only with a score of 75 percent.

3.For M.Tech (Masters of Technology) and M.E. (Masters of Engineer) – Applicants who have completed B.Tech or B.E. with a proper Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) score will be eligible for the PG degrees. Candidates with the Master of Science degree which is gained by a 5-year program in applied science or science are also eligible for these degrees.

Exams

To be a part of the Engineering colleges, students are supposed to appear for entrance exams. Engineering calls for tougher competition as there are a lot of candidates and so there are a lot of colleges offering admission on the basis of entrance exams.  In India, this is conducted on various levels – National, State, and University Levels. Some of the important entrance exams are:

1.JEE (Main) – The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) is conducted by the NTA (National Testing Academy) established by The Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (now known as Ministry of Education). The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) contains two papers. There is no compulsion to appear for both the papers. 

• The first paper-Paper1 is conducted for admission to Undergraduate Engineering Programs (B.E/B. Tech) for additional confirmation at the NITs, IIITs, other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs), Institutions/Universities supported/perceived by taking an interest State Governments, just as a qualification test for JEE (Advanced), which is conducted for admission to IITs.It is computer-based.
• The second paper-Paper2 is led for confirmation in B.Arch and B.Planning courses and will likewise be led in Computer Based Test mode aside from one paper, that is the ‘Drawing Test’ which will be directed in Pen and Paper mode or offline mode.

2.JEE (Advanced) – The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Advanced)  is also conducted by the NTA (National Testing Academy). This is conducted only for the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs). It is compulsory to appear for both papers of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Advanced).

3.BITSAT – Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test BITSAT), conducted by the BITS Pilani is easier compared to the JEE but has a lot more competition. It is for admission for the first degree integrated courses.            

4.VITEEE – The Vellore Institute of Technology Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE) is conducted by the Vellore Institute of Technology is the common entrance exam for the various bits. It includes the B.Tech course.         

5.GATE – The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) allows the candidates to get into IITs, NITs, and other renowned institutions for further admission in the P.G. courses.

Future Job Opportunities

1.PSUs (Public Service Undertakings) – These are run by the government and are good-paying jobs. One can apply to them after clearing the GATE, the competition is high for this job. The PSUs of course check your GATE scores for the same. This can be applied for after B.Tech.

2.Campus Placement – The campus from which you complete your course offers a good job directly there.

3.Industrial Engineers – The work of an industrial engineer includes the identification of ways to reduce waste during the production process by developing systems. They can work across almost any business sector.

4.Biomedical Engineers – They combine engineering with the medical field to improve devices in order to keep human health better. 

5.Civil Engineers – The roads, buildings, bridges, airports, etc. all that we see on a daily basis around us are the creation of civil engineers. They design, build and create.

6.Software Engineers – Researching and writing of new programs and the computer operating systems are all world upon by the Software Engineers. If one has an interest in computers they should definitely go for this. 

7.Electrical Engineers – All electrical equipment like electric motors, electrical engines of cars and aircraft, communication systems, etc. are reviewed, invented, and innovated by these engineers.
